The Government College of Teacher Education, Dharamshala is one of the oldest institutions of teacher’s education in Himachal Pradesh. The institution was established in October 1956. The institution was affiliated with the Punjab University, Chandigarh. Later when the reorganization of the states happened in India, the affiliation changed. The College has been affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Shimla since then. In 1944, the Ministry of Human Resources Development, New Delhi changed the naming convention to “State College of Teacher Education” from the previously given name, “College of Education”.
At the moment of establishment there was a growing need for in service teachers. The GCTE Dharamshala took the initiative to become one of the most effective institutions in Teachers education. The College has become “Centre of Excellence” in teachers training program for “pre-service” as well as “in-service” teachers’ teaching.
Throughout the decades the GCTE Dharamshala has catered to the training of an unfathomable number of in-service teachers-trainees. And its vision is to follow that tradition & create more groundbreaking examples over the upcoming decades.

Since the very beginning (in the year of 1956) the college has eyeballed their mission, which is “विद्ययामृतमश्नुते” (vidyaamrtamashnute), which means “Through gyan and Yog, we attain Immortality”. These are the words from the Isavasyopanishad, which indeed inspired the mission of the institution to level the quality up to the mark & make the college a glorious yet reliable establishment. The core initiatives of the institute are as follows:

The College has been recognised by the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE), New Delhi since May, 2015. The institute is permanently affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
